Simulation-aided study of herbicide patch spraying: Influence of spraying features and weed spatial distributions

Patch spraying is a technological way to reduce herbicide amounts required control weeds by triggering only where lie. Nevertheless, the adoption rate of this technology farmers still low and there lack efficient tools assess patch applications depending on features weed spatial distributions. To avoid unrealistic in-field experiments, virtual sprayer designed computer simulations are carried out quantify reduction possibilities ability apply right patches ensure efficiency. The spray application simulator combines theoretical description using various boom section widths (from 0.5 24 m) with experimental data describing nozzle patterns obtained from three commercial nozzles. Virtual infestation maps random locations aggregation degrees modelled different coverage rates elliptical sizes. Simulation results analysed through two performance indicators: i) ratio compared uniform broadcast (on entire field area), ii) proportion area which higher than 85% prescribed rate. Computer enable estimate simplified relationship use as function rate, size width. This demonstrates that provide practical resolution reach given target according distribution.
